When it comes to personal goals and work-life balance, many people set goals around health and wellness. For many people, this involves losing weight—eating right, moving their body, and increasingly talking to their doctor about medical interventions like Ozempic.

These drugs aren’t magic: they’re tools to help people take better control of their diet. Furthermore, they are not painless interventions: for many people, they can have unpleasant side effects.

Most things worth doing are the same, right? Improving—whether in your personal life, relationships, or your business—involves taking control of some things, admitting you need help, and often dealing with the painful side effects of change.

The past few years have been challenging, first because of the pandemic and then because of the economic turmoil of the past year. From mansion taxes to interest rates to commission lawsuits, times can be tough here for real estate professionals.

When you’re in a bind, it’s easy to add new stuff: new strategies, new techniques, new bells and whistles that promise to “fix” whatever’s going on.

I suggest we go in another direction and let go of things that no longer serve us. Here are some ideas:

people

We always say real estate is a relationship business, but we don’t always say some of those relationships are toxic.

Maybe the customer’s request is completely unrealistic. Perhaps the coworker’s competitive spirit turned toward unethical behavior. Maybe a friend or family member doesn’t respect you. Check in with the people in your life to see who you may need to distance yourself from in order for you and your business to thrive.

Place

Are you working in the right community? Are you limiting yourself to the community you’ve always farmed in, ignoring new possibilities and new opportunities? Are you paying for office space you don’t need or are you staying put because you’re lazy?

Environment is important, where you live and work provides the environment for your business and the services you provide. Consider whether it’s time to reassess and take action.

thing

Is your home, car, or office filled with clutter? When people question the state of your workspace, do you joke, “You know where everything is”? Do you spend too much time taking care of “stuff” without considering how it serves or improves your life?

Are you stuck in unhealthy spending patterns that need to be reined in? It’s time to look at what you have and what holds you.

Habit

Whether it’s procrastinating, stirring the pot, or having that extra glass of wine at night, we all have habits we can break. Maybe you’ve developed bad habits around meetings, time-consuming processes, or a lack of delegation.

Maybe you use outdated technology out of habit (and out of resistance to learning new things). Have the courage to question why you do the things you do and find out whether you are driven by need, efficiency, or habit.

fear

If you’ve had a down year, if you’ve been betrayed by a coworker, if you’ve been criticized by a client, you may be working in fear. Maybe it goes back to mistakes you made in the past or a fear-based childhood.

Facing your fears and overcoming your anxieties can free you up to make this the best year of your work life and home life. need help? Consider talking to someone to help you resolve some of these issues.

I hope this year’s Spring Market brings you everything you want and leaves behind the things that no longer serve you. Let go of those heavy burdens that are holding you back and make you look leaner, stronger, and more powerful than ever.
