Do you regularly and intentionally reflect on past and current business practices with a view to improving and growing?

People often reflect on past decisions and identify “failures” with regret or shame. In the dynamic and ever-changing world of real estate, conscious reflection and using the past as an opportunity to learn and grow offer powerful opportunities to transform the way you do your real estate business (and life).

As mentioned in Harvard Business Review, one should not underestimate the power of deliberate self-reflection. This thoughtful and courageous practice allows us to reach the “top of the game.”

Through this approach, conscious reflection enables us to:

  • Refocus on the big picture and don’t get lost in the details
  • Define and redefine your goals, don’t get hung up on what you think “would” or “should” be
  • Start looking at your past results through a more neutral lens
  • Be honest and have a clear understanding of what works and what doesn’t
  • Identify stress, tension and energy drain in your work and life (and make changes accordingly)
  • As a result, you’ll experience optimized decision-making, increased confidence, adaptability and resilience

Kari’s case

Let’s take the example of Kari, an experienced real estate agent facing a challenging market shift. Amid this uncertainty, she chose to turn to reflection, looking at herself and evaluating her strategies, goals, and results.

Through introspection, Kari not only clarified her goals but also refocused her on a client-centered approach and learned about the ideal needs of her ideal clients. This transition not only boosted her confidence, but also improved her ability to adapt, which is critical in navigating the ever-changing real estate landscape.

Kari enjoys her career more than ever because she works with passion and feels inspired every day with new goals.

Zoom out and look at your business from another angle

Reflection is a powerful tool for real estate agents who want to refine and refine their practice and achieve success. By taking a step back and evaluating your past experiences, you can gain valuable insights into which strategies are paying off for you and which areas need change and improvement.

Think of this reflective process as zooming out, looking at the entire landscape from a wide-angle lens. You’ll gain a deeper understanding of market trends, customer needs, your personal strengths, and what you need to focus on so you can make informed decisions and succeed.

When we take time to consciously reflect in our lives, we will find that our purpose becomes clear; we will become stronger, more resilient, and more adaptable. When we take the time to be open and honest with ourselves and examine both positive and negative outcomes, we can identify patterns, refine our approach, and make adjustments when necessary.

This process of taking time to reflect will foster a continuous improvement mindset.

Put into practice

What’s next for you? We recommend that you take the following actions as you reflect on the lessons you have learned both personally and professionally over the past year:

First, set aside time next week to add some intentional reflection time into your schedule

Ask yourself:

  • What am I most proud of?
  • What’s the biggest obstacle I’ve encountered?
  • Where and how do I feel most frustrated?
  • What works well?
  • What areas need improvement?
  • What goals, plans, and projects do I need to reconsider, restructure, or redefine?
  • What support, help or guidance do I need?
  • What support, help or guidance have I overlooked or underutilized?

Next, remember to keep an open mind and consider how these insights will impact your future real estate strategy.

  • How do these obstacles, challenges, triumphs, and insights guide my actions and decisions moving forward?
  • How can you make the process of deliberate reflection a habit in your work and life?

Finally, share your findings with your coach, team members, or sales manager. Ask for their feedback and how you can use the information to create positive change.

You can unlock the benefits by using reflection as a tool for your growth. From clarifying your purpose, to redefining your goals and developing adaptability, this practice will put you in a better position to control the ebbs and flows of your business.

As you navigate the complex real estate market, you can view your business through the lens of continual growth and improvement, using your life experiences as fertilizer so that you can stay at the forefront of real estate.
