Forget high-tech tools and complicated success formulas, writes brokerage owner Tania Moore. Building a satisfying real estate career comes down to these five people-first steps.

I got into real estate by pure chance. I’m a recent graduate of the communications department at Augustana College (a small private school in Illinois) and can’t find a job in the field I just earned my degree in.

After a fruitless job search, I thought adding another qualification to my resume might help increase my chances of career success,o I started graduate studies in broadcast journalism.

A classmate of mine alerted me that her company, Century 21 Real Estate Office, had a new marketing director position opening. I got the job and I’ve been in real estate ever since.

Since getting this job, everything in my life related to real estate has been well thought out, and thankfully I can say that it has allowed me to live a fulfilling, successful career. Today, I’m leading the brokerage business that my husband, Eb, and I co-founded. This is an exciting time for me and I am excited about the future.

Everyone has a different definition of success, especially in real estate where there are many different measures. However, success for me is measured by how much positive impact I can have on my community and how well I help others achieve their dreams.

At our company ERA Live Moore, we like to say that we want to help clients and agents “live more.”

To that end, I believe there are certain best practices and concepts that real estate professionals can adopt to achieve this kind of success.

1. real

In an increasingly automated world, real human connection is being replaced by artificial intelligence as the bright interaction that people within your sphere of influence look forward to.

Our business is built on building relationships, and if you can be a positive person who is attractive in your own right, business will always go your way.

2. listen

Part of being authentic is listening. A person’s needs are not just data points put into an Excel worksheet; they are part of what that person needs to be happy.

Invite open and honest conversations and take the time to understand what your colleagues or customers are telling you. Emotional intelligence and being able to read between the lines in a conversation go a long way.

3. Understand the stories numbers tell

Yes, it’s important to know the key players, but even more important is knowing how to humanize the trends and stories they tell. Real estate is a people-oriented industry.

4. Surround yourself with different people

As much as we all want to be the ultimate encyclopedia of knowledge, it’s easier (or even better) to surround ourselves with people who are smarter and different than us. Everyone has a need to buy a home, which means you’ll interact with people from all walks of life who have unique needs that you won’t know about in advance.

Embrace DEI efforts and understand that the more unique people you surround yourself with, the more well-rounded you will become.

5. Embrace lifelong learning

One of the biggest reasons I fell in love with real estate is that it offers new opportunities every day. It provides new relationships, new resources, and most importantly, new learning opportunities.

You don’t need to store everything in your head all the time; you just have to be willing to open your eyes when new information comes to you.

I think having a real estate license is the ultimate gift that keeps on giving. Buying a home is the largest investment a person can make, and most of our lives occur at home.

We work with people at every stage of their lives, and I believe we can define our success by our ability to help others make and enjoy this investment.
